Free vintage knitting pattern: Cable Pullover No. 3298 (1947)

October 13, 2013 by Tasha 11 Comments

Hi everyone!

To get you started in the fitting a 40s pullover series, today I’m sharing the pattern I’ll be knitting, Cable Pullover No. 3298, from 1947. This way if you’d like, you can follow along with the pattern, now or in the future!

Cable Pullover No. 3298 - 1947

It’s written for three (vintage) sizes: 14, 16 and 18. Final measurements at the bust are 34″, 36″ and 38″. The pattern uses sport weight yarn at a gauge of 19 stitches over 3 inches, and is knit flat in pieces and seamed. Of course, I’ll soon be talking about the changes I plan to make, so stay tuned for more.

Download: Cable Pullover No. 3298 (pdf)

Ravelry: Add it to your queue

In the next post in the series, I’ll look at how I plan to change the gauge and yarn weight. Yay!

Thank you for sharing this pattern. I love vintage pullovers!

There’s something I’ve been wondering though and thought maybe you know the answer since you’ve worked a lot with vintage patterns.
Do you know what was the weight of one ball of yarn back then? Sometimes it only states the number of balls used in the instructions and last time I knit something I ended up buying way too much yarn. 😀

    Thanks!

i had the same question. How do we figure out the amount of yarn we need for this sweater when we don’t know the yardage on the original and it’s given only in the number of balls? I know cables eat up the yarn.

Such a classic, beautiful cable knit. I’ve always been fond of this pattern. I had a pumpkin orange hued cable knit sweater when I was a teen that I wore until it was all but thread bare. I hadn’t thought of it in ages, thanks for the fun little trip down cable knit lined memory lane.

You sure do know how to make a gal want to abandon all prior knitting plans and make this up with you! 😀

Awww, I came across your post about knitting a sleeve cap using short rows (for which, THANK YOU!) and then loved the cable sweater pattern. I tried to download it but it seems that the link no longer exists – well the post IS almost ten years old, so I guess that might be why :-))
……but is the download still available, by any chance? I did look on Ravelry but it just says that the publication is out of print.
