Nisse: knitting pattern release

March 26, 2014 by Tasha 35 Comments

Friends, it’s been a long time coming, but my second knitting pattern is finally released! Meet Nisse.

Nisse: a knitting pattern by Tasha Moss

Nisse is a whimsical little stranded hat inspired by folk-and-novelty themed patterns of the 1940s and 1950s. It features little fellows called nisse, tiny household spirits from Scandinavian folklore, but you might know them as gnomes. They’re helpfully harvesting carrots in the garden.

This hat is a little bit spicy, with up to 4 colors stranded in a row in the first half of the pattern. But once you get to their hats, it’s back to only 2 colors at most. Then it’s smooth sailing up through the crown, with rays of sunshine featured in the decreases. It evokes the warm summer sun shining down on the garden!

Nisse: a knitting pattern by Tasha Moss

I actually designed this pattern before Victory, but needed the perfect time to release it. Originally, the idea started some years back when I created a version of this chart for a Paper Dolls yoke pullover by Kate Davies. I lost steam on that pullover long, long ago, but I never lost my love for this theme. And I’ve breathed new life into it as my design for Nisse.

If you ask me, it’s a delightful little knit for chilly Spring days!

Yarn
Quince and Co. Finch (100% Wool; 221yd / 202m per 50g skein), a light and springy American wool that’s perfect for colorwork. It’s one of my favorite fingering weight wools!

1 ball each of the following 10 colors: Cypress (dark green), Nasturtium (orange), Snap Pea (light green), Gingerbread (brown), Bird’s Egg (light blue), River (dark blue), Apricot (peach), Egret (white), Winesap (red), Goldfinch (yellow). If substituting yarn, you will need 25g or less of 10 colors of fingering weight / 4 ply.

Gauge
28 sts / 32 rounds = 4” / 10cm in stranded stockinette using 3.25mm (US 3) needles, or size needed to obtain gauge

Needles
2.75mm (US 2) needles (for ribbing)
3.25mm (US 3) needles (for body of hat)

Size
One size. Circumference is 20.5” / 52cm. Will stretch to comfortably fit head circumferences up to 24” / 61cm. If a slightly larger or smaller size is desired, simply go up or down a needle size from needles that give you correct gauge.

Construction notes
Hat is worked in the round in stranded stockinette, with centered double deceases to shape the crown. Please note that there are several rows that include 3 or 4 colors per row, which is discussed in the pattern.

Well, with such a name, there is of course no way that I can’t make this pattern.
Very cute! Four colours in a row does indeed sound a bit spicy, but then again stranded colourwork is my favourite so I’m up for the challenge!

As a swede, and thus a scandinavian, I can’t stop smiling over the fact that you named your pattern Nisse! 🙂

Excellent work! I was really pleased with the Victory pattern and I’m sure this will be just as good. Looking forward to more designs from you.

ITS GOT FREAKIN GNOMES ON IT!…I do not think I have the words to adequately describe how awesome this is…You’ll have to take my word for it but I am instead expressing it through the medium of interpretive dance!

A-flipping-Mazing! This is just adorable, I know have to knit this even if 4 colours at a time makes me anxious (bring on the tangle!) as I can’t think of a better hat to keep me warm whilst digging in my Victory Garden! xx

Hey! I was scrolling through Ravelry’s pins and saw you in this hat! 😀 I love it – I think I’ll be learning to knit this year – some things just don’t quite cut it as crochet!

PS: love the red hair – we need to do lunch some time!
