Vintage knitting, sewing, and a lifetime of craftiness

muslins

For the love of checks

Aloha! I have a new dress to show off today! And technically a new cardigan too, but I'll save that for another post as I plan to yammer on a bit about this dress. ;) This dress has two things that make it special to me: first, some super dedicated pattern matching that I'm proud of, and second, a muslin that led me to a fantastic "aha!" fitting moment that will forever change how I approach a certain fitting issue ... Pants update: I (kind of) (maybe) have a winning combo!

December 2, 2014 by Tasha 50 Comments

Thank you all so much for all your comments and suggestions on my post about my pants fitting struggles and seemingly endless cycle of muslins to try and fix the bagginess at the back of my thighs. I really appreciate your thoughts, helpful ideas, and commiseration. After my post, I mulled over all the suggestions, did more research, and started to try out some new adjustments on one of my previous muslins (the ugly ... Read more »

Pants muslins and back of thigh wrinkles have nearly done me in

My sewing friends out there, I'm about to get all fitting saga on you. And it's about pants. I know. It's a really really really long post about pants. You've been warned. Or maybe "A tale of misguided adjustments". Or "I will get these pants right if it kills ... Read more »

Stick-to-it-ness

Yesterday evening I sat down to actually begin work on the muslin for my vintage blouse. I figured out the front gathers on the shoulder pretty easily, sewed up the shoulders and the sides... and then spent about the next 2 or 3 hours reading two paragraphs of my pattern. Vintage sewing patterns being a little skimpy on the instructions (if not downright pithy sometimes), it probably worked out to about 45 minutes a ... Read more »

uniform sewing

January 11, 2011 by Tasha 4 Comments

This afternoon, I sat down to make a muslin. I admit that I'm really not a big fan of doing them anymore than I'm a fan of knitting a gauge swatch. But like in knitting, I know when I need to do one and when I don't. This weekend I finished up my blenders blouse and I'm extremely happy with it. (I hope to get some photos next weekend when there's sun.) I'd do a few things different next time, but I know I'll be making the ... Read more »
