Coral on my mind {and my lips}

May 21, 2012 by Tasha 46 Comments

Hello everyone! I’ve been obsessed with the color coral for quite some time. I think since last spring! I got a gift certificate to Sephora for my birthday, and I decided to splurge on a lipstick I’d been wanting to try for awhile. Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté in Rose Paris (27). As I’m sure you’ve noticed, I usually stick with red, however I thought this bright pinky coral would be a fun change. I paired it with an even brighter pinky coral nail polish, Essie in E-nuf is E-nuf.

I know one of the reasons I like this lipstick is the gorgeous vintage-inspired tube, and the light yummy scent. It just screams old Hollywood starlet.

I’m enjoying the color when I’d like something a bit less vibrant than red, or just want something a tad more casual. This color can really only be applied if your lips aren’t too dry as it accentuates every little dry bit of skin, but I think that’s an issue with lighter lipsticks in general (or at least lighter lipsticks on me).

Today was ridiculously hot for May, so it was a good day for one of my favorite dresses. Well, truth be told I haven’t rotated my closet yet, so I’ve been wearing the same 3 or 4 summer dresses over and over again lately as they’re the only ones I have out. So while I say it was a good day for this dress, I’ve probably worn it 3 times in the last week. (Shh, don’t tell.)

I even infused my outfit with bits of pink and coral.

Outfit details

50s house dress from Bamboo Bettie,
earrings made by me
vintage brooch a gift
vintage sweetheart bracelet and plastic barrette from somewhere or other
tooled wedges from Remix

As if I needed any more inspiration for my coral love lately, I just need to look outside. Pinks, especially those with a hint of coral tickle me every time I see them in the yard.

Do you have a coral lipstick or nail polish you love? Especially one that’s a bit less hot pink? I’d love to hear about it. I definitely don’t see my coral lust waning anytime soon!

(Stay tuned for a small giveaway later in the week!)

That dress is very cute.I like the piping detail on it. The lipstick tub is also really cool. I wish more brands would make retro inspired make up containers. I’ve been wanting a pair of shoes like the ones you’re wearing.

I really wish more brands would do retro tubes, too! I feel like they’d be popular with many women, not even just those of us who wear vintage!

I love coral, and that lipstick looks so nice and lush!
I found the repro Revlon Fire and Ice looked coral-y with my skintone, plus it came in the gold glamour tube. The YSL one looks way nicer though.

I saw last night on the news it was 36c (97F) in Chicago at the moment – crazy times!

Coral’s one of my signature colors. You can try MAC l/s in Ravishing, Crossfire, which are both permanent colors. They also have Vegas Volt if you’re in the mood for an in-your-face orange-y coral. Clinique’s Chubby Stick in Mega Melon is a nice, moisturizing every day coral.

Both of those MAC colors look promising, I’ll check them out, thanks! My go-to red is Ruby Woo. 🙂

I love the picture of you, that adorable dog jumping up on you and the purple flowers behind! It could be a pin-up poster, it’s perfect. I also like the look of this pinky-coral lipstick on you, it’s very light and fresh. I bought a coral lipstick earlier in the year, called “Kiss me coral” Super Lustrous Lipstick (750) by Revlon. It’s a lot more orange than yours and heads more towards red than pink, but I like it’s vibrancy. It’s a nice change from red. x

Thank you! As soon as I sit down on the ground she gets all excited and comes running over. lol

I like orange corals too, in fact I generally prefer it to really pink corals, but I just couldn’t resist this one!

Yay for Coral! I first was tempted to try out the hue after reading Esme and the Laneway’s blog Post:http://esmeandthelaneway.blogspot.com/2011/08/how-i-wear-difficult-colours-in-my-case.html.

I now have a coral blush (Bobbi Brown: Coral #3) and a coral lip gloss (Bobbi Brown: Tangerine 15) that I wear often now.

I love your daily outfit photos and your shoes are amazing!

Oh yes I remember that post because I loooove mustard! lol

I may look into both of those Bobbi Brown products. One of my friends talks about that brand and I always forget to try it out. I have a slighty coral blush that I LOVE from Tarte (I love their blushes), but could stand something else!

Lovely! I need to find some nice coral lipstick…I love how it looks and sometimes it’s nice to go a bit softer than the standard red (though, I do love my red!!) 🙂 Such a lovely dress and I ADORE those shoes!!!

The coral looks great on you and your hair looks super too. I have similar coloring, so I may have to try the YSL if it isn’t too expensive. I love the tube. I wish more companies did stylish retro packaging too.

Unfortunately it is quite expensive for a lipstick, hence it being a splurge. It’s the most expensive lipstick I’ve ever bought. :/ I agree, I wish more companies did retro packaging, too!

Wow, I really like that coral lipstick on you, very pretty. I only recently bought my second ever lipstick (I’ve always been more of a chapstick girl) and it is a very true red, so I can’t help you with other coral lipsticks – other than to say it is a color that works for you (as does red).

You look perfect! I also very much like your new lippy- very pretty! I’m not sure if I could take a true coral myself, but I might see what a pinky coral would be like as I usually wear a dark pinky red which can be a little heavy looking for this so called spring/summer! Mind you it’s fairly sunny here at the moment, so I better make a trip to the shops!

Good morning beautiful lady, I love your sweetly charming spring/summer perfect outfit, and think that cheerful lip hue looks splendid on you. I’m usually a die-hard red lip gal, too, but for the past couple of months I’ve been wearing a medium pink hue (Clinique’s Raspberry Glace) a lot as well. Sometimes – especially, I find – during the warmer months, it can be refreshing to give red a little breather.

Wishing you a marvelous Monday & week ahead,
    ♥ Jessica

Coral is my favorite lip color for summer. I just pulled my tube out and have been wearing it often. I too find that my lips need to be in good condition for the coral to look good. Alas, mine are not right now…

I love that you’re doing the coral. I’ve been thinking about that color a lot this Spring. I have a tube of my late grandmother’s lipstick in a color called Primrose that actually comes across as a coral color. She always painted her nails coral too. I think that coral deserves more love than it gets. Love the dress!

Coral suits you so well! I like lighter lipsticks in the summer – pinks and corals and even red washes – they remind me of summer flowers & tropical beaches 🙂 Personally, though, I’m a hot pink girl myself (if I even get around to wearing lipstick… I always lick it off within a couple of minutes, boo!), so no help here 🙂

Anyway, can we discuss your HAIR?? It looks soooo good – I love all those curls pulled to one side with the barrette on top. Beautiful! I cannot stop staring at it, ahaha, hope that’s not creepy 🙂

I totally went and searched for a wrap dress pattern right after I posted this. I bet there are some creative ways to make a wrap dress stay closed. Maybe a little row of buttons near the bottom? I can’t wait to see how your wrap dress turns out. Seems so perfect for summer.

I just bought the light pink lipstick from Besame, I just love there lipstick because is stays on forever. Up until now, I also would only wear red. Love your shoes too, I have the red tooled heals from Remix and have yet to find an occasion to wear them.

You know what, I wear my tan ones with everything! I wasn’t sure at first if I could get away with it because I felt the tooling made them fancier, but I said to heck with it and started to do it. The red ones are gorgeous too!

I have gravitated towards some lighter lipsticks this spring myself. Although Revlon’s “Kiss Me Coral” has been a long-standing favorite in my makeup bag, I’ve added a couple other variations (somewhat lighter) on the coral shade. It’s fun to mix things up a bit–and still have a very “vintage face”!

I love your outfit to death! I’m coveting those tooled wedges like nobody’s business. My husband has offered to buy one of the Remix tooled shoes for me, but I’m too scared I’d wreck ’em (I’m hard on my footwear), or not wear them at all for that reason. hehe! I really adore your dress too; it reminds me of a blue gingham wrap dress I made from a 50s pattern when I was 17/18. It was literally one of the first things I made from a vintage pattern, and I still have fond memories of it. Need to make myself another one of these days because they are so comfy to wear. 😉
