I’ve got a great sewing tutorial for you today! The first of several in a series, in fact. I know! Watch the video to learn my favorite method to insert a lapped zipper, for skirts and pants with a waistband.
I’ve often been asked to do a tutorial for lapped zippers. They feature prominently in many of my handmade garments. In fact, I haven’t done an invisible zipper in over a decade! Around the time I learned how to properly do one (way back in 2010–can’t believe I’ve been blogging since then), I almost immediately switched to the preferred vintage method of using a lapped zipper, and have never looked back.
They look great, plus regular zippers are easier to close and open than invisible zippers, and generally a bit more reliable, too. And if you’re a fan of using vintage metal zippers, it’s a great place for them.
However, I don’t approach sewing lapped zippers the same way for each type of garment! There’s skirts and pants with a side or center back zipper, dresses with a center back zipper, dresses with a side zipper, and blouses with a side zipper. To name a few places I’ve used them… and places I’ve come up with my favorite ways to do things!
So this week, I’m kicking off my ultimate lapped zipper series. Slowly peppered throughout the next few months or so, I’ll be doing tutorial videos on my YouTube channel, covering all of my favorite tips and techniques for inserting lapped zippers. (And once I have more than one in the series, I’ll setup a playlist.)
Catch the first video today, focusing on the method I use for zippers and pants, which was the first method where I thought, “Oh, this is a fabulous result!”
And now YOU can have a fabulous result with it, too. Watch the video to find out how!
