The benefits of keeping a sewing journal

June 28, 2023 by Tasha Leave a Comment

It’s no secret that I love to sew. A LOT. And sewing is a constant journey of learning. One of the most important things I’ve learned is that keeping a sewing journal is a total game-changer!

It’s basically just a big ol’ notebook to keep track of projects. I record things like the pattern I used, include a little swatch of the fabric, and any other details I deem important at the time of writing about the project. It’s a great way to stay organized, motivated, and help improve your sewing skills over time!

I thought it would be fun to give you a little tour and more insights into the importance of my sewing journal, particularly since I sometimes get asked about it when I mention to people that I keep one. In my latest YouTube video, you can learn more!

And honestly, there’s so many reasons to keep a notebook for sewing projects! This is barely scratching the surface:

  • Organization–A sewing journal can help you stay organized by keeping track of all your sewing projects (or um, all the ones you remember to track…). This is especially helpful if you’re like me and you sew so much that it’s easy to forget what you sewed and when!
  • Motivation–It can help you stay motivated by tracking your progress. When you look back at your past projects, you can see how far you’ve come! I love that aspect. When I’m stuck on inspiration, sometimes I go back to look at past projects in my journal.
  • Skill improvement–It can also help you improve your sewing skills. Maybe this one seems weird, but it’s true. By recording your techniques and tips, you can refer back to them later when you’re working on a new project. It can help you avoid making the same mistakes and refresh you on techniques you don’t use often.

It doesn’t matter if you choose a physical notebook (like I prefer for sewing) or a digital one (like I prefer for knitwear design). Don’t sweat it–even if you’re newer to sewing, just get one, and jump right in, even if you don’t think you’ll have much to write about! The more you sew, the more you’ll learn how you want to use it, and the more you’ll have to record in your journal over time. You’ll love looking back at it in the future!

Watch my YouTube video on why I love my sewing journal, to find out more and get a peek inside mine. 😊
