You know me, I love sewing with prints! It’s a huge part of what I sew. And one of my favorite sewing skills is print matching, or pattern matching: matching the fabric print across a seam. Often for me, I’m doing this on a center back seam (and usually with a zipper). In my latest YouTube video, I’m showing you how easy it is to do.
This bit of sewing magic is closer to your fingertips than you may think!
You don’t need any special tools to do this: just your fabric laid out in a single layer, your pattern piece, an iron, and a bit of patience. A walking foot is optional but helpful (learn more in my walking foot tips video).
It’s a great sewing skill to add to your arsenal, and a wonderful way to add a professional touch to your handmade garments. Since it’s all in how you cut your fabric out, this technique works whether or not you’re inserting a zipper. It’s the technique I use for many of my center back zip dresses, plus blouses and more.
Just look at how nice it looks on the back of this dress I made out of this cute vintage Italian novelty print fabric!
Really anywhere you need a match the print across a straight seam, even if it’s not a garment, this method for pattern matching works, and is relatively quick and easy. I’m excited to finally share how I print match with you!
Watch my tutorial to learn how to do this technique and match up prints perfectly!
