Tasha Could Make That

Tasha Could Make That

Vintage knitting, sewing, and a lifetime of craftiness

Last weekend’s vintage finds

June 21, 2012 by Tasha 41 Comments

Hello everyone! I’m glad you enjoyed my tutorial on how to make a feedsack hair bow. It’s such a quick and easy project, you better let me know if you make one!

Last Sunday was our one year wedding anniversary. Our plan initially was going to involve a walk around the nature preserve where we got married, but come the day of, we just weren’t in the mood. Isn’t that terrible? lol We keep missing the vintage fairs this spring and summer due to conflicting plans, so we’ve been a bit starved in that department. So instead, we drove out to the suburbs, had a lovely lunch and went to an antique mall. Julia from the Volo Antique Mall… if you’re out there reading, we’re coming to you next! 🙂

I am crazy about this rhinestone-studded nut charm bracelet!

The purse is hard to photograph because yes, it’s actually covered in plastic.

Outfit details: me-made New York leaf dress and matching hair bow, vintage belt from Etsy, 50s confetti earrings from Auntdelta (though you can’t really see them), bangles from here and there, nut charm bracelet from eBay, Lotta from Stockholm clogs, can’t remember where the purse is from.

What do you think about these shoes? I love clogs. I have worn my red or yellow mary jane-style Sven clogs with many vintage outfits (like here). They are just so darn comfy and cute and great for casual summer outfits, even if they make my outfit a little funky or folksy. (What the heck, I’ve always been a little funky and folksy!) Last summer I saw a brand that had a style of peep toe clogs. Clogs that have a 1940s feel, yes please! I saved a pair to my bookmark list and of course promptly forgot about them. When I looked this spring, it seemed like the brand didn’t exist any longer. So I found Lotta from Stockholm, which had peep toe clogs in a medium and low heel. Of course since then I’ve discovered Sven has peep toe clogs now (with way more colors) as well as Swedish Hasbeens, though the Lottas are quite a bit less expensive.

I’m still deciding if I like the look of this heel style on me. It’s the same as the Hasbeens high heel… their super high looks more 40s but 3.5″ is just too tall for me. But I’m in love with the rest of the shoe. And I know I’m not the only one who likes this style, I’ve spied peep toe clogs on Katie from The Little Red Squirrel and Jenny from Yesterday Girl, too!

Anyway, enough shoe rambling, onto the vintage finds. Not a huge haul, but we picked up some nice things. From the last time we visited this place I remembered there was a booth with oodles of inexpensive scarves and buttons, so of course I had to take a few of each home.

We got two Richter Artcraft wall plaques for the living room that are amazing. Molded gold plastic! Since we’re keeping the gold-flecked mirrors on one wall, these will go between. We may decide to paint the frames to make them a little more dramatic, and because there’s a bit much brown in that room. I’ve watched Hepcat Restorations do this many a time with amazing results.

(And wow, I actually found a room in the house that I can take natural daylight photos in, at least for a small window of opportunity in the morning.)

I love seeing things like this on the back. 🙂

And the find that takes the cake. For our anniversary, Mel bought me this amazing lamp for my bedroom (AKA the guest bedroom, where my closet and vanity are, and where I’ll be decorating and painting).

Isn’t she stunning? She’s not in perfect condition… the shade has some issues, and what looks like the matching finial is actually clearly not from this lamp (hint: it’s a fish) but is a good match. She’s not a Reglor, but definitely in that style.

I saw her the last time we were at this place and kind of regretted not taking her home, but she was still waiting patiently for me this weekend. I love her! I can’t wait to design the rest of the room with this piece in mind. She’s just what the bedside table (early Heywood Wakefield) needed.

What a great lamp! I can’t wait to see how that room comes together. We’re still trying to figure out how to decorate the bedroom.

I have mixed feelings on clogs. I used to have such negative associations of them from the 70s, but I’ve grown to like them more in recent years. Especially when I see them worn in such smartly put-together outfits like yours and the two you linked to. They do appear to have a very classic look. We used to have a client at work who made Danish clogs, so I got a few free pairs from them, which I wore constantly for a few months and then completely turned on them one day. I think I even threw them away. See, I am not rational with clogs. Perhaps I need to buy a pair this summer and try to make peace with my conflicted feelings. I’m already coveting those yellow ones.

Ha ha! It would be worth trying a pair again just to see if you like them. The Lottas are nice because they’re about half the price of some of the other brands, so perhaps better to ween yourself in that way. 😉

Yes, you saw Dinah sneaking herself in there! Of course she wasn’t even in the room until I was taking pictures!

I’m hoping to get to Randolph Street this weekend, but it’s just been so crazy on the weekends for us lately! I’m also hoping when it cools down and we settle in the house more (aka get it more company-friendly) to maybe have a little vintage get-together. 🙂

Well, truthfully we need to start pulling the house together more! It’s been so warm we’ve been focused more on outside, so I expect we’ll actually get the mojo to paint and thus really start decorating once it’s later in the summer/early fall… we don’t want to put anything on the walls until we paint, and so of course that’s holding up pretty much everything decorating-wise that I’m thinking about. But I will share all the fun when we do start!

You look so lovely! Happy Anniversary!! I love your outfit. I’ve wanted a pair of Swedish Hasbeens forever…but they are so gosh darn expensive. Maybe I’ll look into the kind you’re wearing. I think they’re wonderful and such a great staple. Also, that lamp is just amazing. So. Amazing.

That is such a great lamp. Oh and the buttons! I’ve been into buying and collecting vintage buttons. There is so much character and beauty behind them. The antelope frames are totally awesome and would look great framing a high back chair.
I love your dress and the pattern is really awesome too.

I just bought some shoes from Lotta in Stockholm – closed ones though. I don’t have them with me in Belgium, so I’ve not been wearing them loads, but I think I like the height of the heel. I was a bit worried cos they’re called high heeled something, but it’s manageable! Though I’ve not done a huge amount of walking so far!

I walked quite a bit in these ones over the past weekend, and found I had no problems! They aren’t that great if you have to stand for long periods of time (like in a line/queue), but then again almost nothing is!

The dress really suits you, love the fabric, can never find anything like this in the stores round my neck of the woods.

And that bag….drool…..is it covered in plastic to protect the detailing then? never seen that before, very interesting!

Drats! Another shoe to put on the wishlist! Actually I’m glad as I love the Hasbeens but find the cost way too prohibitive.

I adore all your finds. They’re all so lovely. And Mel is so thoughtful to have remembered and then bought that lamp for you. She’s a keeper! Happy Anniversary to you both!

Nice finds! It must be fun shopping for things for your house, and putting rooms together.

I’ve also just bought a pair of Lotta from Stockholm clogs – mine are red and closed toe-d (will blog about them soon!). I went for the soft soled variety which are black on the base and seemed lower than the other types. So far I’ve been loving them but I really love your wooden peeptoe version too.

This one was Oakton Street Antiques in Arlington Heights. It’s not too bad. I wish there were more around, but seems you really need to get a few hours away from the city to find them. I’ve seen sooo many along the route to St. Louis, we keep saying some day we’re going to just do a trip up and down the state to hit all those ones we see from the road but never can stop at (because we’re trying to get to my SIL’s lol).

If you think of it, shoot me over your email addy and I’ll let you know when we come out to Volo. We’re thinking maybe this weekend but haven’t firmed up our plans yet. 🙂

I LOVE the antelopes and the cool-mint-green color of the lady lamp! SUCH. GOOD. FINDS. I’m also super jealous of the clogs because they’re adorable and they only go up to a size 9.5 on the website (what about us glamazons!). Plastic covered purses with those kind of embellishments = no looking under the tables at restaurants for that spare rhinestone or seashell that’s made a break for it after forty years! I wish there was a way you could “plasticize” pre-existing purses like that.

Thanks for the tip! I’ve been checking out the Sven clog close outs actually, and they have a similar style. Seems easier to order from USA, but maybe I’m wrong. I just can’t decide on heel height and color, too many choices.
